It is located in the Roaring Forties of Bass Strait, off the north-western tip of the main island of Tasmania, about half way between Tasmania and the mainland state of Victoria. The southernmost point is called Stokes Point and the northernmost point is called Cape Wickham. There are three small islands surrounding King Island, namely New Year Island and Christmas Island situated to the northwest, and a smaller island called Councillor Island to the east.

King Island imports the world's best surfers and exports produce sought by the world's top chefs.  Whilst the prospect of unwinding in this quiet peaceful paradise may be what attracts you, it is the friendly locals, beautiful beaches and local produce that will have you wanting to return.  King Islanders are unbelievably friendly and welcoming.   As one local is quoted "if you want prissy, go elsewhere.  If you want pristine, come to King Island".

Designed with a most spectacular setting amongst the dunes and facing the Great Southern Ocean, King Island golf course is a 9 hole links course designed within the landscape of the natural undulating land. People often describe it as resembling the famous "St Andrews" in Scotland.

The friendly locals will welcome you with stories at the relaxed club house which is full of rich history and offers mesmerising views of the coastline.  You can join in with the annual King Island Open over the Melbourne Cup Long Weekend in November. Competitors visit from all over Australia. 

 

Surfing

KI Wickam surfKing Island has a reputation as being one of Australia's premier surfing destinations.  With King Island's diverse coastline which is blessed with premier beach and point breaks to challenge even the most experienced board rider. Martha Lavinia Beach is world renowned as a beach break that has been voted as one of the top 10 waves in the world. There are a great range of spots to keep the family happy also, but remember there are no patrolled beaches.

The water is cold and a wetsuit is advisable for surfing these pristine beaches. Access to some areas are only accessed by a 4 wheel drive, if you are looking for that hidden spot. Pick up a detailed map of King Island and check the wind and tide conditions before arriving and delight in the uncrowded waves awaiting.

 

Fishing

Fishing is King Island!  From squid, sweep, salmon and gummy the choice is endless . With the choice of many pristine beaches and coastline positions, The Wharfs at Currie, Grassy and at the famous Naracoopa Jetty, there is always something to catch. Visit Terry Perry's store in Currie and stock up for all your fishing equipment and baits. At this unique store you will come across some of the friendliest locals who have an absolute wealth of knowledge of the best spots to visit.

Situated at 144ᵒ longitude and 40ᵒ latitude, this isolated place is cut off from the rest of the world by jagged reefs, raging seas and howling Roaring Forties winds. With mineral rich soils, cool annual temperatures, abundant rainfall and a consistent salt spray thanks to the constant westerly winds, the environment contributes to quality milk production which helps to create some of the finest cheeses on earth.
